Summer Immersion Seminar offered by the NSAHC:

“The Real War Will Never Get in the Books: Exploring the Challenges and Opportunities of Teaching the American Civil War”
THIS SEMINAR IS FULL

This three day immersion seminar will feature Dr. Margaret Storey, Associate Professor of History at DePaul, noted Civil War era historian and author. This seminar will allow participants to explore Walt Whitman’s notion that the ‘real’ Civil War was an event of such enormity and complexity as to prevent the war from ever being truly understood by later generations. The immersion format allows for two days at the Newberry Library, historical lectures, readings and analysis of primary sources from the Newberry collection, and a final day at Palatine High School to pull the experience together for the classroom.
Meets: at Newberry Library July 22-23 and at PHS July 24 Time: 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m

Summer Immersion Seminar offered by the National Council of History Education:

“American Reform before the Civil War”
This three day immersion seminar will feature noted Professor of Sociology Lois E. Horton, from Brandeis University. Professor Horton is an author, teacher, and historian of historical social policy, African American history, as well as an author of five books covering the issues of American race, class, and gender. The NCHE colloquium will feature a three person leadership team composed of Professor Horton, a specialist in History Education, and a Master Classroom History teacher. Participants will be introduced to recent scholarship, primary sources, and techniques appropriately used for classroom instruction. This Seminar will be held at Palatine High School for all three days. A more detailed itinerary, description, dates, and details will be available for teachers and on the NSAHC website in January.

NSAHC Summer programs will begin in the summer of 2009. Registration for these opportunities will be open to teachers in districts 211 and 214 starting in January 2009.

SPRING 2009 – UIC Graduate Credit class:

“HIST 551 – Colloquium on American History: Problems and Cases in American History after 1877”

This course provides teachers with exposure to some of the most important scholarship in American History post-1877, with particular attention to major developments such as the Industrial Revolution, social and political reforms, both World Wars, the Cold War and the Civil Rights, feminist, and conservative movements.

Summer 2009 - UIC Graduate Credit Class- Held at UIC

“HIST 551 – Colloquium on American History: American Indian History as United States History”

This class is oriented around problems—and opportunities—associated with integrating American Indian historical experiences into classroom lessons on United States History. It proceeds from the conviction that American Indian historical experiences are integral to United States History, not simply exotic, distant, romantic, tragic, or somehow different. Indeed Prof. Hosmer will consider how American Indian History informs our understanding of U.S. History, but what it means (for our students and ourselves) when we leave it out, and how examples from American Indian experiences can enhance lessons on a whole range of topics. Even more broadly, this class is designed to explore, together, the concept that U.S. History can be understood as plural histories, sometimes running as parallel streams, sometimes intersecting, always informing one another.

NTC provides Chicago-area teachers access to the latest scholarly developments in their fields and an opportunity to discuss important content-related issues with scholars and colleagues. Seminars are organized as a series of half-day seminars in nine subject areas.

Teachers in District #211 must complete the following forms: v Graduate Study Program Approval Form v Form #211-1 Application for Pre-Approval of Graduate Work Procedure for Tuition Reimbursement

Teachers in District #214 must follow the following steps: Case 1: For those who do not have a Masters degree, they should complete Attachment I [Vertical Step Advancement]. Upon completion of the coursework, one must submit Attachment J [Completion of Professional Growth Credit].
Case 2: For those with a Masters, but no plan, one must submit either an Attachment E [Masters +30] or Attachment F [Masters +60].
Case 3: Those with a current plan may submit an Attachment G [Addendum to plan].

Note that these steps must be completed prior to start of the graduate level course and any summer symposium program offered by the Northwest Suburban American History Consortium. The project director will confirm with the individual school district that these outlined procedures have been filed when a class list is submitted to Jeffrey Butzen of District #211/ Judith Minor of District #214.

Summary of Programs with Northwest Suburban American History Consortium Funded by the Teaching of American History Grant awarded through the Department of Education

Graduate Classes – Starting Fall 2008- Eight classes to be offered in total - each has 4 hours of Graduate credit

15 participants per course
The grant will pay for all of the tuition, fees, and books for the course
Priority registration based on the following criteria:
- teachers without a Master’s Degree,
- those who teach the students most at-risk for not meeting AYP under NCLB
- those teaching in schools on Academic Warning Status
- those with the least teaching experience
- all teacher applications will be considered with input from individual school’s Department Chair
Teachers may take whichever courses meet their needs; the cohort is not closed
Classes during the school year will meet at Palatine High School; those taught over the summer will meet at UIC
Classes may be applied toward a M.A. or M.A.T. through UIC, provided the teacher is admitted or has applied to the program
The classes are:
- Fall 2008 – Problems and Cases in American History Before 1877
- Spring 2009 – Problems and Cases in American History After 1877
- Summer 2009 – American Indian History as United States History
- Fall 2009 – 1970 to the Present
- Spring 2010 – The Age of Reforms 1900-1945
- Summer 2010 – Race and Politics in the United States since Emancipation
- Fall 2010 – American Women’s History
- Spring 2011 – The Role of Religion in Shaping the American Experience
Each class will culminate in a symposium at the Newberry Library, at which the teachers will present their lesson plans. Teachers will be invited from not only member schools but from the Chicago area.

Summer Programs – Starting Summer 2009- and for subsequent summers, the NSAHC will offer two programs with ample opportunity for total staff development**

1) One program will be coordinated by the National Council of History Education (NCHE) 2) The other program will be coordinated by a Northwest Suburban American History Consortium (NSAHC) in conjunction with on site historically based resource partners.

1) NCHE Sessions:

open to 32 participants
three day programs designed to provide intense immersion in content, with particular focus on primary sources
NCHE team consists of a Historian, a Master Teacher, and a Learning Specialist

Planned topics are :
- Summer 2009 - American Reform Before the Civil War – Historian Dr. Lois E. Horton, George Mason University
- Summer 2010 - The Great Depression, New Deal, and World War Two – Historian Dr. David Kennedy, Stanford University
- Summer 2011 - 1960s – Historian Dr. Mitch Yamasaki Chaminade University of Honolulu
Each teacher can earn CPDU credit and will be paid a stipend ($150 daily- total of $450.00) for their participation
These three day sessions will be held at a member school- All materials and lunch will be provided and paid for

2) NSAHC Sessions:

open to 32 participants
three day programs; two utilizing a local on site historical source and one to develop lessons based on the experience
Planned topics are:
- Summer 2009 - Two days on site at Newberry Library in Chicago ~ “The Real War Will Never Get In the Books": Exploring the Challenges and Opportunities of Teaching the American Civil War” – Dr. Margaret Storey, DePaul
- Summer 2010 – days on site at the Hull House in Chicago ~“Participatory Democracy and the Legacy of the Hull-House” – Led by Hull House staff
- Summer 2011 - “Working People and the Struggle for the American Dream” – Dr. Leon Fink, UIC – includes bus tour of Chicago’s labor history sites
Each teacher can earn CPDU credit and will be paid a stipend ($150 daily- total of $450.00) for their participation
The third day will be held at a member school for instructional development planning- all materials and lunch will be provided

Participation in Professional Organizations

All member schools will receive membership in the Newberry Teachers’ Consortium
All teachers who participate in the NCHE summer programs will receive membership in the NCHE
All teachers will receive membership in the Organization of American Historians
Seven teachers per year will have the opportunity to travel to the OAH convention.
